Meeting to focus on hospital asbestos concerns

There will be a meeting today between the Department of Human Services, Echuca Hospital and the Health Services Union about the welfare of hospital staff.

The union says staff may be exposed to asbestos from demolition work planned soon for hospital renovations.

A spokeswoman for Victorian Health Minister Bronwyn Pike says the Government is pleased the union has brought the possible problem to its attention.

She says staff safety is paramount and today's meeting will get to the bottom of the concerns.

The Nationals Member for Rodney, Noel Maughan, says the hospital has confirmed it will remove any asbestos correctly and it will not be a danger to workers.

He says the hospital may need to reassure staff by explaining how it will go about the job.

"I think in this case it is probably a breakdown in communications and therefore I am delighted to know that the hospital and the Department of Human Services is meeting with representatives of the union in order to hopefully give them the assurances that they are entitled to have," he said.
