Quincy smelter trail free of asbestos

By GARRETT NEESE, Gazette Writer

RIPLEY - Results from testing done on the Department of Natural Resources recreational trail near the former Quincy Smelter Works site are currently being analyzed, according to a Michigan Department of Natural Resources supervisor.

Last month, the U.S. Environmental Agency collected air samples to be tested for asbestos, as well as a number of heavy metals. In addition to the smelter site, testing was also done above the Portage Lake Shipping Canal and by a proposed alternate trail route along M-26.

The Michigan Department of Community Health and the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry are analyzing the results. The findings should be ready for release within one to two weeks, said Debbie Begalle, the DNR's Western Upper Peninsula district supervisor.

"Next week, the DNR and the agency will be talking about the preliminary results. We're waiting for the results to be done, and hopefully we'll have a little more next week," she said.

A separate series of tests conducted in late August by U.P. Engineers & Architects found no asbestos in the trail dust.

"The results of the air sampling ... indicate the dust produced from the trail on Aug. 27, 2004, did not contain asbestos," the report stated.

UPEA collected air samples over the course of a day from four locations along the north side of the trail. A UPEA absestos inspector simulated trail use by making several trips with an off-road vehicle over a 3.5-hour period.

The air samples were then analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, which yielded no asbestos fibers.

"We feel the report speaks for itself," said Chris Holmes, an environmental engineer with UPEA.

Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau President Mike Lahti said he is happy with the report's conclusion.

"I'm glad the results turned out the way they did," he said.
