Information on asbestos do's and don'ts
Monday, 27 September 2004

ASBESTOS related diseases are terrible illnesses and given the number of older-style fibro houses in Queanbeyan, it's an issue worth thinking about if you are considering renovating.

Many of us have seen the devastating effect asbestos exposure has had on friends and families and the NSW Government wants to make sure that homeowners and renovators are protected from risks associated with removing asbestos, such as asbestos fibro sheets from their homes. Asbestos was commonly used in the construction of many homes, garages and sheds until the 1980s. Asbestos in fibro products was phased out in NSW by 1986.

The expert advice is that asbestos products, if in sound condition and left undisturbed, are not a significant health risk. Health problems may occur when people are unaware of the hazards of working with asbestos fibro cement, and don't take sensible precautions to protect themselves from risk.

The NSW Government has released a concise, easy-to-read asbestos guide for renovators and homeowners. Concerned that many renovators may unwittingly be exposing themselves and their families to the risk of asbestos exposure by pulling down fibro structures - 'Fibro & asbestos - a renovator and homeowner's guide' is being widely distributed to hardware stores, local Councils, Government agencies and on the Internet.

The brochure provides practical information on the do's and don'ts of working with fibro - it contains a safety checklist, guidance on safe disposal of fibro and some general tips about what to do if fibro is damaged. It also has a list of contacts and useful websites for more information. 'Fibro & asbestos - a renovator and homeowner's guide' and frequently asked questions can also be found at www.nsw.gov.au/fibro.
