Moon-Suited Technicians Play Ball for Asbestos Test

It was a surreal sight at a community park in El Dorado Hills on Friday, as Environmental Protection Agency workers in protective "moon suits" played softball and other games.

It wasn't recreation that the workers were seeking. Instead, they were trying to stir up dust in a realistic fashion so that air samples could be taken.

The EPA technicians were looking for the amount of airborne asbestos particles kicked up from soil in the area. "What we're trying to do here is actually measure that route of exposure that we're most concerned about," said Jere Johnson of EPA.

Asbestos occurs naturally in parts of El Dorado County. The mineral is inert as long as the soil is undisturbed, but if inhaled can cause several life-threatening diseases, including lung cancer

In the coming days, EPA workers will also take samples on the grounds of a middle school and two elementary schools.

The EPA expects it will be several months before test results are complete. The test results will be shared with those who live or work in the affected area.

Asbestos is the name given to a group of six different varieties of fibrous minerals. The mineral fibers are not affected by heat or chemicals and do not conduct electricity, which at one time made then desirable for insulation and fireproofing. The use of asbestos in commercial applications was banned by the EPA in 1989.
