EPA fines South Tahoe businesses $50,000 for asbestos
RENO , Nev. The owners of a restaurant and a motel on Lake Tahoe's south shore will pay a combined 50-thousand-dollar fine for an asbestos violation.
The owners of Mulligan's Irish Pub and the neighboring South Lake Tahoe Super Eight Motel agreed to the fine in a settlement with the U-S Environmental Protection Agency.
E-P-A officials say they had been accused of violating the Clean Air Act by failing to notify officials of asbestos removal, improper removal and improper disposal of asbestos during renovation work in 2001.
Deborah Jordan of the E-P-A's Air Division in Los Angeles says asbestos is a hazard if not handled properly. She ays that during the remodeling of Mulligan's Irish Pub in July 2001, the E-P-A and the California Air Resources Board observed improper disturbance and disposal of asbestos ceiling material.
Asbestos material also was found outside in the open air, exposing the general public and workers to the materials.
