Friday, 8 October 2004
The National Party confirmed on Monday that they would return all donations they have received from disgraced building materials group, James Hardie.
The confirmation came amid accusations from members of the public that the
Last week, Ray Goodlass, Greens candidate for the seat of Riverina, called on the National Party to return all donations that they have received from James Hardie.
"This is tainted money and the Nationals cannot ignore the moral imperative to distance themselves from it," Mr Goodlass said.
"Are the Nationals hiding behind John Howard, who has committed to returning the Liberals' money, while they hang on to their share?"
However Riverina MP, the Nationals Kay Hull, stated on Monday that the National Party intends to give back all donations received from James Hardie.
"The National Party is going to return every single dollar we have received from James Hardie," Mrs Hull said.
Once Australia's largest producer of asbestos products, James Hardie has been accused of attempting to avoid its legal responsibilities to asbestos sufferers by setting up a parent company in the Netherlands.
This move is thought to have effectively shielded the company from being legally chased for extra funds.
James Hardie has denied all accusations made against them.
