The owners of a restaurant and a motel on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore will pay a combined $50,000 fine for an asbestos violation, federal regulators said Thursday.

Francis Lennon, owner of Mulligan’s Irish Pub, and Mira Pradip and Thakor Patel, owners of the neighboring South Lake Tahoe Super 8 Motel, agreed to the fine in a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

They had been accused of violating the Clean Air Act by failing to notify officials of asbestos removal and improper removal and disposal of asbestos during renovation work in 2001.

“Asbestos is a hazard if not handled properly,” said Deborah Jordan, director of the EPA’s Air Division in Los Angeles.

“The EPA and the California Air Resources Board will continue to do inspections and enforce any asbestos removal violations to insure companies follow the rules to protect public health,” she said in a statement Thursday.

During the remodeling of Mulligan’s Irish Pub in July 2001, the EPA and the California Air Resources Board observed improper disturbance, removal and disposal of asbestos ceiling material, EPA officials said.

Asbestos material also was found outside in the open air, exposing the general public and workers to the materials, the agency said.

Asbestos fibers released to the air are considered a hazardous air pollutant by the EPA. Inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause lung disease and cancer, the EPA said.
