INAC forces another closure of Iqaluit gravel pit
WebPosted Oct 8 2004 09:20 AM CDT
IQALUIT - The gravel pit in Iqaluit is closed for the third time this year.
Iqaluit's director of engineering says Indian and Northern Affairs asked the city to close it down Thursday.
Brad Sokach says the federal department is concerned about petroleum, lead, copper and zinc in the gravel.
He says the area was used as a dumping ground in the 1950s and 60s.
"The concern would be if there were contaminants present and people could potentially be exposed to the contaminants, there may be health risks down the road," he says.
"But I'd like to add that we have been testing the material that's been leaving the site this year and everything has been pretty much pristine to date."
Sokach says Indian and Northern Affairs is also concerned contractors using the site aren't following approved protocol for the pit.
He says Iqaluit is waiting for written direction from the department outlining what it should do.
Sokach says he's not sure when the North 40 gravel pit will reopen.
