Fires, smashed glass make Hotel Shediac a 'nightmare'
WebPosted Oct 7 2004 08:59 AM ADT
SHEDIAC — Vandals have taken over the historic Shediac Hotel, setting fires and ransacking the interior, prompting fire officials to demand the 150-year-old building be torn down.
The old hotel is a mess inside. There's hardly room to walk because of shattered glass, smashed televisions, rotting paint and ripped woodwork.
Shediac's deputy fire chief Ronald Leblanc says the old building is a firefighter's nightmare, with hidden dangers inside and asbestos on the outside. "That asbestos, that burning asbestos could damage the air in the town."
Vandals have set a few fires recently, the last one a few days ago.
The old hotel was once a grand building, hosting prime ministers and celebrities. Town council voted to destroy it, but a local lobby group has intervened, trying to convince the town and a private developer to preserve it.
But the rise in vandalism has Shediac Mayor Raymond Cormier worried. He says the poor shape of the hotel is the reason council voted to demolish it.
"It was very hard for those five councillors to vote in favor of the demolition of the Hotel Shediac but they did so because they knew the population wanted so."
