Unions hopeful of new deal for asbestos victims
October 1, 2004 - 4:08PM
Optimistism grew today of an agreement with James Hardie Industries about the best way to compensate asbestos victims.
ACTU secretary Greg Combet today led a meeting between representatives of James Hardie, including chairman Meredith Hellicar, and victims, on how the company will fund its outstanding and future liabilities to victims.
Emerging from the meeting this afternoon, Mr Combet said he was "very pleased to at last get a round table with James Hardie and to start to identify ways in which we can try and make sure people are compensated."
"We are approaching the negotiations with a very simple and clear objective," Mr Combet told reporters.
"That is, we want to get the funding that is necessary to ensure that anyone who has a claim against James Hardie for an asbestos illness either now or in the future will have access to compensation."
Mr Combet declined to provide details of the discussions.
"What I can say is that I think we made a bit of progress today," he said.
"We're optimistic in coming days and weeks that we've laid down some principles today and discussed them through that may provide a solution to this terrible problem."
However Mr Combet said there was "still an awful long way to go".
Asbestosis victim Bernie Banton said he felt vindicated by today's meeting.
"We've finally reached the stage that we can sit down and get into the nitty-gritty," Mr Banton said.
