Bids opened for asbestos project in Towanda
By: James Loewenstein 09/22/2004
TOWANDA - Towanda School District officials opened bids Tuesday for the asbestos removal portion of the planned $10.1 million expansion/renovation project at the Towanda Middle School building.

Gary Seymour, business manager for the school district, said he was pleased with the bids that were submitted.
There were 11 bids submitted for the work, ranging from $51,095 to $241,000, Seymour said.
The low bid was submitted by PDG Co. of Drums, Pa., he said.
The low bid "was lower than we had thought it was going to be," Seymour said.
The asbestos removal work, which will be one of the first parts of the renovation/expansion project, will probably take place in October and November, he said.
The asbestos at the school is mostly contained in floor tiles, he said.
The asbestos in the school is not currently hazardous or friable, Seymour said on Tuesday. However, the school district has decided to remove the asbestos to avoid any possible asbestos problem in the future, schools Superintendent Don Butler has said.
The asbestos is not friable, meaning that it does not give off airborne particles that can lodge in people's lungs, Butler has said.
Asbestos Management Inc. of Athens, which is coordinating the asbestos removal from the school, will make a recommendation to the school board on which firm to hire, Seymour said.
The school district had planned to open the bids for the rest of the Middle School building project on Tuesday. However, because there was a change in the design for the project, contractors were given an extra week to prepare their bids, which will be opened Sept. 28, Seymour said.
